New Kanye West: "Power"
"They said I was the abomination of Obama's nation / Well, that's a pretty bad way to start the conversation." That's Kanye West, in the brand new five-minute sneer session "Power", which Stereogum says is the first single from Kanye's forthcoming album Good Ass Job. Kanye's been pretty quiet ever since the whole Taylor Swift thing happened last fall. But "Power" isn't quiet at all. It's noisy as hell, with a beat that sounds like a car stereo eating itself (with a King Crimson sample!), and Kanye's back in full-on hauteur auteur mode. Rumor has it that Good Ass Job will find Kanye ditching the sparse electro of 808s and Heartbreak, working instead with boom-bap legends like Pete Rock and RZA. "Power" is the first evidence we've heard of Kanye's return to straight-up rap, and those rumors are starting to look true.
