One Laptop Per Child

A real world laptop for real world change. The XO laptop.

Many years and an infinite amount of sweat equity went into the creation of the XO laptop. Designed collaboratively by experts from academia and industry, the XO is the product of the very best thinking about technology and learning. It was designed with the real world in mind, considering everything from extreme environmental conditions such as high heat and humidity, to technological issues such as local language support.

The XO laptop has built-in functionality for still and video photography, voice recording, and game playing.

In addition to its superior connective capabilities, the XO laptop can work with a wide range of external devices.

Along with everything you’d expect from a laptop keyboard, the XO provides some innovative keyboard shortcuts. Four buttons along the top left of the keyboard allow children to navigate through the collaborative “zoom” levels to see others and their shared activities.

Design factor was a priority from the start: the laptop could not be big, heavy, fragile, ugly, dangerous, or dull. Another imperative was visual distinction. In part, the goal is to strongly appeal to XO’s intended users, but the machine’s distinctive appearance is also meant to discourage gray-market traffic. There is no mistaking what it is and for whom it is intended.

And that is the world’s poorest children.  One Laptop Per Child helps provide each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. When children have access to this type of tool they get engaged in their own education. They learn, share, create, and collaborate. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future
