US billionnaire investor Warren Buffett said Monday that a massive natural disaster would not hamper the future of the Japanese economy and could prompt a new bout of stock buying.
"I'm not looking at Japan's economic future differently from 10 days ago... extraordinary events offer (a) buying opportunity," he told reporters.
Buffett, the chairman of investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, was visiting South Korea to attend a ground-breaking ceremony for a local unit of Israel's Iscar Metalworking Companies, 80 percent owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
Japan's Nikkei index lost around 10 percent in the week following the devastating March 11 quake and tsunami.
Buffett, however, urged against selling Japanese stock -- markets were closed in Tokyo on Monday -- and said Japan would recover relatively quickly, Yonhap news agency said.
The disaster, which has left 8,649 people dead and 13,262 missing, could cost the Japanese economy up to $235 billion, the World Bank said Monday.
Growth, however, should pick up in subsequent quarters "as reconstruction efforts, which could last five years, accelerate", it said.
Buffett, known as the "Oracle of Omaha" for his investment savvy, said Berkshire was seeking further acquisitions worldwide including South Korea following its $9 billion purchase of US lubricant maker Lubrizol.
"We're looking at a number of big businesses in Korea, the US, the UK. We hope to find good companies wherever they may be. Basically, it's the bigger, the better," he said.
The tycoon also played down military and nuclear threats from North Korea, saying the communist country "isn't a big threat" to the firm's investment in the capitalist South.

Warning that Libya is at the crossroads of peaceful democracy and civil war, the United States has vowed to press leader Col Muammar Gaddafi to quit by squeezing him economically and militarily.
US defence leaders said imposing a no-fly zone over Libya would be "extraordinarily" complex and Nato allies have yet to agree on any military intervention in the crisis. Col Gaddafi has been fighting a bloody rearguard action against a pro-democracy uprising now in its third week, with at least 1,000 people reported killed and 100,000 people fleeing to neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia.
"In the years ahead, Libya could become a peaceful democracy, or it could face protracted civil war, or it could descend into chaos," US Secretary of State Hillary told the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
"The stakes are high."
Col Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam said last week that Libya faces civil war and "rivers of blood.

Captain Faris Zwei, among officers in the east who joined the opposition to Gaddafi, said there were more than 10,000 volunteers in Ajdabiyah, 500 miles from the capital.
Cameron plan for no-fly zone shunned by world leaders in libya
David Cameron was looking increasingly isolated last night over his call for the international community to impose a no-fly zone over Libya.
The Prime Minister told MPs on Monday that he wanted Britain and its allies to look at enforcing a ban on flights over Libya to put pressure on Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, meaning British forces would have to commit to shooting down any Libyan aircraft that breached the zone.
Other countries were lukewarm about Mr Cameron’s call, with Russia opposing it outright and France publicly questioning the wisdom of it.
The US distanced itself from the plan, while Turkey said Nato intervention in the north African country would be “unthinkable”.
Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said a no-fly zone was “superfluous” and that world powers must focus on fully using United Nations sanctions. Russia’s consent is required for any backing from the UN because it is a veto-holding member of the Security Council.

Anti-Gaddafi forces have been firmly in charge of eastern libya up to Brega, since shortly after protests erupted in the country last month.Mohamed Yousef, an officer in the town of Ajdabiyah, about 75 miles from Brega, said: "It's true. There was aerial bombardment of Brega and Gaddafi's forces have taken it."
There were also reports that fighter jets had been deployed to bomb the cities of Ajdabiya and Az Zawiyah. Witnesses said they saw two warplanes bomb the eastern part of Ajdabiya, while they also claimed pro-Gaddafi forces were advancing on the town, some 470 miles east of Tripoli.
Gaddafi's forces meanwhile battled poorly armed rebels for control of towns near the capital trying to create a buffer zone around his seat of power. The increasingly violent clashes threatened to transform the 15-day popular rebellion in Libya into a drawn-out civil war.
Gaddafi's regime has retaken at least two towns and threatened a third, while rebels repulsed attacks on three other key areas — Misrata to the east, Zawiya to the west, and the mountain town of Zintan to the south of the capital.
A petrol tanker meanwhile exploded near the compound of Gaddafi in Tripoli. The cause of the blast was not immediately clear but there appeared to be no casualties.
The international community has stepped up moves to isolate the longtime Libyan leader.
Two US warships were heading towards Libya on Wednesday as the West started flexing its military muscle and rebels fighting Gaddafi's regime began organising the trappings of parallel government.
David Cameron continued to increase the pressure on Gaddafi by warning that Britain should negotiate with opposition groups. He said that, if the Libyan regime started “murdering” its people with aircraft, plans should be in place to “do something to stop that”.
Military leaders weighing a no-fly zone over Libya said it would be a complex task that would require taking out Gaddafi's air defences, and Russia dismissed the idea as "superfluous" and said world powers should focus on sanctions.
Gaddafi's son, Seif al-Islam, warned Western forces not to take military action against Libya and said the country is prepared to defend itself against foreign intervention.
"If they attack us, we are ready," he told Sky News, adding that the Gaddafis are ready to implement reforms.
Facing an unprecedented challenge to his 41-year rule, Gaddafi's regime has launched the bloodiest crackdown in a wave of uprising against authoritarian rulers in the Middle East.
An exact death toll has been difficult to obtain in the chaos, but a medical committee in the eastern city of Benghazi, where the uprising began on Feb. 15, said at least 228 people had been killed, including 30 unidentified bodies, and 1,932 wounded
12 pregnant women die in 10 days before Jodhpur hospital

It took 10 days and the death of 12 full-term pregnant women in Jodhpur in Rajasthan before state health authorities woke up to suspect that all might have died after being administered “infected” intravenous “dextrose and ringer lactose” fluids. Five pregnant women are in a “serious condition,” doctors said.
Two foetuses have died in utero (before being born) while the other 10 survived — and these infants are said to be out of danger.
Following confirmation of lab reports in the Women and Child Wing of the state government Umaid Hospital — the largest in the city — that several batches of IV fluids manufactured by the same company were tainted, health officials have recalled all batches of these fluids, lodged an FIR against the manufacturer and issued a statewide alert against its use.
A 3-member panel of doctors has been constituted to probe the deaths.

RAKTHA CHARITHRAM"I will pull the knife stuck into you; and with it, I will etch a history doused in blood." (Soruvu Kathiye Uruvee eduthu ezhudhavendum Rattha Charithram) goes the song that plays throughout the movie. Cloud Nine Movies and director Ram Gopal Varma have been pumping up the anticipation of fans in Tamil Nadu with blood-red tinted advertisements running throughout last month. In the posters, Suriya was mesmerizing us with his beefy body and bloodshot eyes glistening with anger and vengeance. You may have been startled with the liberal use of the word 'blood'. We are not mindless; we are just doing justice to the movie. Released as Rakht Charitra - Part 1 and 2 in Telugu and Hindi, this movie is bundled up as a single part in Tamil.
Though Rattha Charitram is a biopic of late Andhra politician Paritala Ravi and his enmity with a rival politician Maddalcheruvu Suri, the characters and storyline have been blended with a liberal dose of imagination. Prathap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi) is pulled into the faction-ridden political activities of his family after the murder of his father, brother and their loyalists. Prathap leads his men in ruthlessly killing every one who is connected to his father's murder. Prathap's power in his locality and the political circumstances earn him a seat in the State Assembly elections. He wins the election and sails into the legislature, becoming a State minister. Now, with the state machinery on one side and his henchmen also to support him, Prathap is the undisputed strong man in the state.
Prathap and his men kill anyone who is a threat or will ever be a threat for them. Prathap and his men have taken so many lives that they have lost count of their enemies who have been deleted. His remaining enemies go underground, as they are too terrified to take revenge on him. Suriya (Suriya) is one among the many who lost a loved one to Prathap's brutality. The Hindi and Telugu versions of Rattha Charithram have already been declared blockbusters. Director Ram Gopal Varma seems to be getting better and better in romancing bad men on screen and this is definitely RGV's best attempt till date. There is blood everywhere, but it has been justified with a strong storyline, characters and screenplay. We feel the editing in the first half (of the Tamil version) is poor as the scenes seem to be rush on the viewer. Maybe the compression of the two versions into one was mindfully speeded up. Though it's all about visuals, the dubbed Tamil dialogues sound irrelevant and silly at times, killing the mood of the scenes. Dharam and Sandeep's background score haunts us. Vivek Oberoi as Prathap Ravi makes your knees knock with his brutality; Suriya is a man gone numb with the death of his family; they are the star attractions of the movie. Amol Rathod's camera takes a 360 degree turn in scenes, which is magical in introducing characters. Rattha Charithram is all about the trimurthi (trinity): Surya, Vivek Oberoi and Ram Gopal Varma.

Take That band has been left surprised after fans snapped up more than a million tickets in a day for their 2011 European tour. The tickets had gone on sale early on Friday (29 Oct 10) and agents struggled to keep up to the fan's unprecedented demand.
"We are speechless, truly and utterly shocked. This is the most amazing news for all of us. To sell one million tickets in a day is mind blowing and we think we'll be in shock for a few days," Contactmusic quoted singer Gary Barlow as saying.
As a result of the ticket rush, the group has added more dates at venues including the City Of Manchester Stadium and London's Wembley Stadium. The tour will begin in Sunderland
, England on 30 May.

flew off last night to Berlin for a hush-hush shoot the film in question being Farhan Akhtar's Don 2 - The Chase Continues. Says a source, "Recently, there was buzz about Hrithik joining in Shahrukh Khan's birthday celebrations as he's extremely close to King Khan. While that may be true, the real reason for Duggu's departure to Berlin is being kept under wraps. Apparently, producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani were keen that Hrithik do a special cameo in Don 2."
Adds the source, "Roshan's character is a stylised one with interesting shades and they felt only he could do justice to it. But Farhan and Ritesh want to keep Hrithik's role hidden till the film's release as it's one of the highlights of Don 2. Duggu is very close to Farhan and Ritesh (he acted in Farhan's Lakshya, made a special appearance in Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance and is also in Zoya's next Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara) and he couldn't refuse them."
Besides the character, the source insists that the Roshan boy's presence would add star-studded value to the film. "Hrithik and Shahrukh will come together again in Don 2 after Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. They shared an amazing chemistry and are close friends even today. The audience would love to see SRK and Hrithik again come together in some explosive scenes. Don 2 has highly specialised and daring stunts performed by Shahrukh and Duggu might be seen in a stunt or two himself. He will be in Berlin for a week."

As massive clouds spilled from the glowing cauldron and billowed into the air - continuing for nearly three hours after the blast - debris and ash cascaded nearly four miles (six kilometers) down the southeastern slopes, Subrandrio said.

A powerful earthquake struck waters off western Indonesia, leaving at least one person dead, damaging 150 houses and triggering tsunami warnings that sent thousands of residents fleeing to high ground in panic, officials said Tuesday.
The 7.7-magnitude quake struck 13 miles (20 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor at 9:42 p.m. (10:42 a.m. EDT, 1442 GMT) Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, jolting the Mentawai islands and towns along the western coast of Sumatra island, 175 miles (280 kilometers) to the south.
Mosques blared tsunami warnings over their loudspeakers.
"Everyone was running out of their houses," said Sofyan Alawi, a resident in the city of Padang, adding that the roads leading to surrounding hills were quickly jammed with thousands of cars and motorcycles.
"We kept looking back to see if a wave was coming," said 28-year-old resident Ade Syahputra.
A group of Australians said the temblor created a wall of water that sent a boat crashing into theirs in a bay off the Mentawai islands. Rick Hallet told Australia's Nine Network that his boat exploded and caught fire.
"I ordered everyone up to the top deck," Hallet said. "We threw whatever we could that floated - surfboards, fenders - then we jumped into the water."
One farmer was killed on Pagai, located within the sparsely populated Mentawai island chain, and with more than 150 homes damaged, at least 2,000 people were seeking shelter in makeshift camps, said Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official.
Crews from several ships were still unaccounted for in the Indian Ocean, he said.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.
The city of Padang was badly shaken one year ago by a 7.6-magnitude quake that killed at least 700 people and flattened or severely damaged 180,000 buildings.

One farmer was killed on Pagai, located within the sparsely populated Mentawai island chain, and with more than 150 homes damaged, at least 2,000 people were seeking shelter in makeshift camps, said Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official.
Crews from several ships were still unaccounted for in the Indian Ocean, he said.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.
The city of Padang was badly shaken one year ago by a 7.6-magnitude quake that killed at least 700 people and flattened or severely damaged 180,000 buildings.
That followed the 2004 tsunami off Sumatra's westernmost province of Aceh that was triggered by a 9.1-magnitude quake and killed 230,000 in a dozen countries, roughly half in Indonesia
