Omi's an old friend who has apparently become the biggest star in India since we used to hold meetings in his living room...

Big in Bollywood is the story about American actor Omi Vaidya’s rise to fame as an Indian celebrity. Omi is the co-star of the massive hit film 3 Idiots, and in the month of January 2010, he went from virtual unknown to household name. Omi is a non-resident Indian who grew up in Palm Springs, and is by most accounts, very American. He is now instantly recognized across India as the face of “Chatur Ramalingam”, his character from the movie. His journey from Hollywood to Bollywood is a uniquely contemporary story. Never before have these two centers of world cinema been so aware of each other. Indian cinema is beginning to mirror western aesthetics, and Americans are finally becoming aware of Bollywood films. This documentary came from a meeting of the minds between fellow filmmakers, and a realization that something amazing was about to happen in Mumbai. Omi was describing to us how 3 Idiots was turning out to be the biggest anticipated film of the year in India. And we all looked at each other and realized that we had to go to India and watch this all unfold. 3 Idiots
I can't help but feel like if I had never moved to Philadelphia, I might be involved with the making of this film... Oh well... All the best to Omi! Crazy story.

“We try not to be pretentious at all,” says MLMs frontman Chris Gibbons. “We really like our music, we think our record is great ... but we don’t think we’re the next coming of Lennon/McCartney. We don’t think we’re revolutionizing the world. We think that we’re having a really good time and playing really good music.”
That mix of earnestness and fun has suited the MLMs well. It’s their kaleidoscopic sounds—changing minute to minute, song to song—that first catch the ear. Sunny shoegaze shifts to gritty Offspring-like choruses, followed by a pop-punk snippet even Panic at the Disco could call their own (albeit with heavy country/bluegrass overtones). And, of course, the unmistakable Nintendo-esque tones of the MLM keyboard—a tiny, plastic “Music Learning Module” used by beginners that gives each MLMs song its uplifting, playful vibe. READ MORE

Chris Gibbons (the guy on the right) is a friend and right back on the West Philly FC soccer team... On weekends he is part of the band The MLMs and they have an upcoming show Nov 29 @ dr. watson's pub 216 S. 11th St., Philadelphia. Doors open @ 9:00pm. They go on @ 9:30pm. Check it out.
