I am on a Metro-North train the other night, on my way to the new station and new platform right next to the old Yankee Stadium. But it could just as easily have been the 4 train coming up and out of the city and taking you to the Yankees, to one more great October baseball night in the Bronx, a pageant of the city as deep and lasting as anything we have. The train is filled with Yankee fans on a Friday night, in Rodriguez No. 13 jerseys and Jeter No. 2's and Yankee caps and navy Yankee windbreakers. The air is filled with baseball talk, all about taking this ride to the Yankees. And it occurs to me, and not for the first time: There aren't fans better than this anywhere in the world.
