As one of the three million people last week who watched the text-only video for "Fuck You," the new song by Cee Lo Green, I knew exactly what the New York Times’s Noam Cohen meant yesterday when he wrote about a song built around "a certain crude phrase" that is "title, chorus and punch line"—and "unprintable in a family newspaper." But longtime readers of the Times would not have had trouble understanding the story, even if they didn’t know the song. One of the paper’s peculiarities is the deadpan way it tiptoes around certain crude words even as it must report on them: when then Vice-President Dick Cheney tells Senator Patrick Leahy to “go fuck yourself” or when reviewing a play called “Shopping and Fucking” or a band named Fucked Up.
