Random 'Police & Thieves'
'Police and Thieves' is a great song...
and Junior Marvin's version, though the original, isn't as popular as The Clash's version...
Why is that? I like Junior's version better... debate!
(from Wiki)
"Police and Thieves" is a well-known reggae song, first recorded in the Jamaican reggae style by the falsetto singer Junior Murvin in 1976 (Island WIP 6316), and one year later in a punk-reggae version by The Clash. Murvin's first commentary was "They have destroyed Jah work!". The song was written by Murvin and the man who originally produced the song, Lee "Scratch" Perry. The studio band was jamming and Murvin was playing with words at Perry's Black Ark Studio when suddenly sound, rhythm, melody and lyrics appeared in a structured form and Perry decided to record the song the same afternoon. The next day dub-versions and versions with different lyrics were recorded. The song, about gang war and police brutality, was out on the street in a couple of days and became a big hit in Jamaica. Later on, the song proved to be a bigger sales and club hit in England than in Murvin's and Perry's native Jamaica. The English punk rock band Clash's punk/reggae version appeared on their eponymous debut album. The Clash's version, which is six minutes in length, is an example of a rock band incorporating reggae into their repertoire. READ MORE

Random Space Jam Box Score
Some people just have WAY too much time on their hands...

WAIT! The guy who did this was from the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective?!?!
(from Yahoo)
The box scores from 'Space Jam' for a nostalgia kick
For basketball fans, few cultural touchstones hold as much nostalgic pull as the 1996 comedy "Space Jam," a Michael Jordan vehicle in which His Airness joins forces with the Looney Tunes to defeat evil space villains who steal the talent of such '90s basketball luminaries as Shawn Bradley and Muggsy Bogues. It's not as good a film as the next film starring these classic characters, the cruelly underrated "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," but "Space Jam" nevertheless means a lot to anyone who grew up watching basketball 15 years ago. It means enough, in fact, that Andrew Mooney of the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective decided to extrapolate from the film's in-game action and create a box score for the battle between the Looney Tunes and Monstars. READ MORE
Pretty awesome... If the Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing Monstars were actual representations of the players themselves, maybe one of those guys would have a ring.
SIDEBAR: I used to think Seal's 'Fly Like an Eagle' song from the Space Jam soundtrack was actually called... 'Fly Like A Negro' ... Thats Racist!

This term can also be likened to 'What the shit?' which is more comical and has a tantamount meaning.

This song, featured in a commercial for an HTC smartphone, was more interesting that the phone itself... advertising fail?
(from FitzAndTheTantrums)
In just over a year, soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums went from the living room to the main stage. The recipe for meteoric success? Six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ. Since their first show at Hollywood’s Hotel Café in December 2008, Fitz and co. have toured with Maroon 5, played to thousands at Colorado’s world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, shared the stage New Year’s Eve with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and performed on KCRW’s esteemed show, Morning Becomes Eclectic. All this on the strength of their stellar five-song EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1. For some bands, it takes a lifetime to build this success, but few performers deliver an unrestrained blast of soul-clapping, get-down-on-the-floor, moneymaker shakers like Fitz and the Tantrums. Now on the cusp of the release of their debut full length, Pickin’ Up the Pieces [August 24, 2010 on Dangerbird Records], the troupe is poised get down in dancehalls across the universe. WEBSITE

The NBA has banned upside down headbands
When ESPN Boston's Chris Forsberg reported on Tuesday morning that the NBA had made a move to outlaw upside down headbands, my initial assumption was that someone was having a little fun with Chris. He's a smart dude and a great reporter, but the league can't be that petty, can they? Boy, can they. Because there was something missing on Rajon Rondo's(notes) head last night as he took to the court against the Heat. A headband. Not even a right-side up version. Because, yes, the NBA has banned upside down headbands. READ MORE

Tijuana Marijuana Bust Largest in Mexico’s History, Poire Says
Mexican authorities carried out the biggest marijuana bust in the country’s history yesterday, the government’s security spokesman Alejandro Poire said. The 105 tons of marijuana seized yesterday in Tijuana were bound for the U.S., Poire told reporters in Mexico City. The drugs were confiscated by soldiers and police in pre-dawn raids in three neighborhoods, Mayor Jorge Ramos said in an interview yesterday. “We’re making a very important effort in the confiscation and eradication of this illicit product,” Poire said in Mexico City. Mexico has impounded more than 7,400 tons of marijuana this year as part of President Felipe Calderon’s fight against drug cartels, Poire said. Drug-related violence in Mexico has killed more than 28,000 people since Calderon took office in late 2006, including politicians and police chiefs. LEER MAS

Netflix experimenting with online-only subscriptions
The company announces the move along with strong third-quarter earnings. Net income rises 26% to $38 million.
After building a successful business by shipping millions of DVDs every month in the mail, Netflix Inc. expects by the end of this year to start letting subscribers give up the shiny discs. In prepared remarks for a conference call discussing the company's strong third-quarter earnings, Chief Executive Reed Hastings said Netflix was looking to offer a new lower-cost plan through which subscribers could access movies and TV shows solely online. The company last month started offering a streaming-only service in Canada for $7.99 a month. Hastings said success there has led Netflix to test an identical offering in the U.S. If the test fares well, all consumers will be able to sign up for streaming-only service. Hastings did not identify a price, but it is likely to be the same as in Canada. READ MORE
