Washington Worries About New Power Couple
At one of those ritualistic Washington dinners where the commander in chief is expected to perform stand-up comedy, President Obama once noted that he had an affinity for Representative John A. Boehner, the Republican leader. “After all,” Mr. Obama joked, “we have a lot in common. He is a person of color — although not a color that appears in the natural world.” The audience roared at the poke at Mr. Boehner’s famously perpetual tan, but the line also struck a chord because rarely, in fact, have two men reached the pinnacle in Washington with so little in common. With Mr. Boehner about to become the speaker of the House, the nation’s two most powerful leaders open this new era with little connection other than a shared fondness for golf and a weakness for cigarettes. One is the son of an African exchange student and was raised in the Pacific, educated at Harvard and transplanted to the big city. The other, who was one of 12 children of a Midwestern bar owner, built his own business before becoming a national power broker.
