The last time most football fans saw John Madden was nearly two years ago when he retired from broadcasting NBC Sunday Night Football and retreated to his home here near San Francisco. No longer crisscrossing the country in his Madden Cruiser — his dislike of air travel is legendary — he lives and conducts business within this 5-mile circle of Northern California. But the Hall of Fame coach remains a player when it comes to Madden NFL, especially since he has more time to oversee the billion-dollar video game series. There's a generation that likely only knows him as that video-game guy. "You say 'Madden' to a 25-year-old, and it's not Madden the coach or even the announcer. It's Madden the video game," says Peter Moore, who as president of EA Sports, oversees the development of sports games published by parent company Electronic Arts. "Madden, I think, actually likes the fact that there's that relevancy to a younger demographic."
