Random 'I'm With You'

This Summer brings with it more new gifts...

Thank You Summer!

(from RollingStone)
Exclusive: Inside the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Comeback Album
"There is no question – this is a beginning," Anthony Kiedis, singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, says in his first interview about the band's new album, I'm With You, which is released by Warner Bros. on August 30th. "Yeah, the sun is just coming up here." Produced by Rick Rubin, I'm With You is the Los Angeles quartet's first studio album since the 2006 double-disk set, Stadium Arcadium. The 14-song record also marks the debut of the Chili Peppers' new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who joined in the fall of 2009 following the departure of John Frusciante. The latter guitarist had been a crucial writer as well as player on the Chili Peppers' biggest albums, including 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik and 1999's Californication. But after he quit, Kiedis and bassist Flea "had this intuitive feeling," the singer says. "We're not really done. We wanted to maintain the Red Hot Chili Peppers if we could do it in a way that upheld historically what we had accomplished. The album's first single, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie," is a hard-pop spin on classic Chili Peppers funk, with a creeping bass line and a marching-disco rhythm in the chorus reminiscent of the late-Seventies Rolling Stones. In fact, Flea likens the rich propulsive interplay on I'm With You – the mix of jamming exploration, textural guitar details and savvy hooks in songs such as "The Monarchy of Roses," "Factory of Faith" and "Goodbye Hooray" – to the classic Stones albums like Exile on Main Street and Tattoo You that he listened to religiously as the Chili Peppers wrote and improvised on new material in 2009 and 2010. "It's about a feeling and a song." Flea says of the connection, "about everyone embracing the moment of the song, not always about the riff."

Random Shaq

Shaq was and always will be the man...

And regardless of what anyone says, I take Shaq over Kobe any day.

(from ESPN)
Shaquille O'Neal eager for next chapter
Shaquille O'Neal walked up the stairs to the makeshift stage in his home gymnasium, pulled out a few index cards with some notes and said the words he never thought were coming. Good-bye. O'Neal, 39, made his retirement official Friday, reiterating what he revealed in a video posted online two days earlier that his NBA playing days are over. Saying those words made his pro career full-circle, since it all ended at his home in a suburb of Orlando, the city where his pro days began when the Magic made him the No. 1 pick in 1992. "Never thought this day would come," O'Neal said. "Father Time has finally caught up with Shaquille O'Neal." He insisted he will not return, either, nor will he coach anyone but his three sons. His career ends with 28,596 points, 13,099 rebounds, 15 All-Star selections, four championships and three NBA Finals MVP awards.

Random Macho Man

Macho Man Randy Savage probably did a lot of drugs...

and he certainly made Mean Gene Okerlund's life a little bit more confusing, but regardless of how he lived his life he was a dynamite entertainer... OH YEAH!!!!

Look at these devastating elbow drops!

(from CBSNews)
"Macho Man" Randy Savage dies in car accident
Professional wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage has died. He was 58. The wrestling legend died in a car accident on Friday in Tampa, Fla. His brother, Lanny Poffo, told TMZ that Savage suffered a heart attack while driving and lost control of his car. Florida Highway Patrol said that the wrestler's 2009 Jeep Wrangler veered across a concrete median, through oncoming traffic and "collided head-on with a tree." The wrestler was transported to Largo Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, according to the report. Savage's wife, Lynn, was a passenger in the car during the accident but survived with minor injuries and was taken to a different local hospital for treatment, TMZ reports. Random Great Depression

Television made me believe that the world before 1960 was actually black and white...

Thanks to these picture released by the Library Of Congress (and of course the ineveitable realization that I was probably a silly child) a little bit of color has been shed on the historic world.

(From DailyMail)
In the bleak light of the Depression: Rare colour photographs of the era that defined a generation
It was an era that defined a generation. The Great Depression marked the bitter and abrupt end to the post-World War 1 bubble that left America giddy with promise in the 1920s. Near the end of the 1930s the country was beginning to recover from the crash, but many in small towns and rural areas were still poverty-stricken. These rare photographs are some of the few documenting those iconic years in colour. The photographs and captions are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color. The images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, shed a bleak new light on a world now gone with the wind.

Random Latitude 48 IPA

I'm a big fan of Sam Adams...

Latitude 48 IPA is delicious and you need to go get some ASAP.

(from Boston.com)
Sam Adams releases Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed, a new single-hop series
Boston Beer Co. is about to do something very cool for people who love India pale ales. The brewery based in Jamaica Plain will release a 12-pack called Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed next month. It's basically a single-hop series in a box. Let me explain. Following on the heels of San Adams' popular Latitude 48 IPA, Sam Adams has decided to take apart the beer's hops formula and show us exactly what it's made of. Latitude 48 contains five varieties of hops -- Hallertau Mittelfrueh from Germany; East Kent Goldings from England; and Ahtanum, Simcoe, and Zeus, all from Washington state's Yakima Valley. (The beer's name refers to the 48th latitude line, where all these hops are grown.)

Random 'Police & Thieves'

'Police and Thieves' is a great song...

and Junior Marvin's version, though the original, isn't as popular as The Clash's version...

Why is that? I like Junior's version better... debate!

(from Wiki)
"Police and Thieves" is a well-known reggae song, first recorded in the Jamaican reggae style by the falsetto singer Junior Murvin in 1976 (Island WIP 6316), and one year later in a punk-reggae version by The Clash. Murvin's first commentary was "They have destroyed Jah work!". The song was written by Murvin and the man who originally produced the song, Lee "Scratch" Perry. The studio band was jamming and Murvin was playing with words at Perry's Black Ark Studio when suddenly sound, rhythm, melody and lyrics appeared in a structured form and Perry decided to record the song the same afternoon. The next day dub-versions and versions with different lyrics were recorded. The song, about gang war and police brutality, was out on the street in a couple of days and became a big hit in Jamaica. Later on, the song proved to be a bigger sales and club hit in England than in Murvin's and Perry's native Jamaica. The English punk rock band Clash's punk/reggae version appeared on their eponymous debut album. The Clash's version, which is six minutes in length, is an example of a rock band incorporating reggae into their repertoire. READ MORE

Random Verizon Guy

Truly the end of an era...

I never really thought of the Verizon "Can you hear me now?" Guy as a real person until now. Makes you think about these silly tv people.

(from Yahoo)
Verizon Phases Out 'Can You Hear Me Now?' Guy
You won't hear him now. Verizon Wireless is taking its famous cell phone commercials -- featuring actor Paul Marcarelli uttering the phrase, "Can you hear me now?" -- in a new direction. In a new profile in The Atlantic, Marcarelli says he was informed of the change via email last September. "Don't feel bad for me, but I'm definitely glad that chapter is over," he said. "Most people my age are now trying to trade in their street cred for money, and I kind of made my money." Marcarelli landed the role of Test Man nine years ago. At first, he says he was embarrassed. "The reality was, it was a job," he says. His contract obligated him to appear in 20-40 spots a year commercials -- in addition to numerous live events (including appearing in front of 85,000 football fans during the halftime show of the Buffalo Bills' 2002 season opener).

Random 'Big In Bollywood'

Omi's an old friend who has apparently become the biggest star in India since we used to hold meetings in his living room...

(from BIB)
Big in Bollywood is the story about American actor Omi Vaidya’s rise to fame as an Indian celebrity. Omi is the co-star of the massive hit film 3 Idiots, and in the month of January 2010, he went from virtual unknown to household name. Omi is a non-resident Indian who grew up in Palm Springs, and is by most accounts, very American. He is now instantly recognized across India as the face of “Chatur Ramalingam”, his character from the movie. His journey from Hollywood to Bollywood is a uniquely contemporary story. Never before have these two centers of world cinema been so aware of each other. Indian cinema is beginning to mirror western aesthetics, and Americans are finally becoming aware of Bollywood films. This documentary came from a meeting of the minds between fellow filmmakers, and a realization that something amazing was about to happen in Mumbai. Omi was describing to us how 3 Idiots was turning out to be the biggest anticipated film of the year in India. And we all looked at each other and realized that we had to go to India and watch this all unfold. 3 Idiots

I can't help but feel like if I had never moved to Philadelphia, I might be involved with the making of this film... Oh well... All the best to Omi! Crazy story.

Random First Class

I've always loved the X-Men story...

but I've been a little disappointed by the movies. Hopefully this one will be better.

(from Wiki)
Professor X has come to be compared to civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and Magneto to the more militant Malcolm X. The X-Men’s purpose is sometimes referred to as achieving "Xavier’s dream," perhaps a reference to King’s historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Magneto, in the first film, quotes Malcolm X with the line "By any means necessary." X-Men comic books have often portrayed mutants as victims of mob violence, evoking images of the lynching of African Americans in the age before the American civil rights movement. Sentinels and anti-mutant hate groups such as Friends of Humanity, Humanity's Last Stand, the Church of Humanity and Stryker's Purifiers are thought to often represent oppressive forces like the KKK giving a form to denial of civil rights and amendments. In the 1980s, the comic featured a plot involving the fictional island nation of Genosha, where mutants were segregated and enslaved by an apartheid state. This is widely interpreted as having been a reference to the situation in South Africa at the time. READ MORE

Random Beatbox History

Not the best ever, but dude is quite ill...

(from Wiki)
Hip hop is the form of musical expression and artistic culture that originated in African-American communities during the 1970s in New York City. DJ Afrika Bambaataa outlined the four pillars of Hip-hop culture: MCing, DJing, breaking and graffiti writing. Other elements include beatboxing. Since its emergence in the South Bronx, Hip-hop culture has spread around the world. Hip-hop music first emerged with disc jockeys creating rhythmic beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables, more commonly referred to as sampling. This was later accompanied by "rap", a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry presented in 16 bar measures or time frames, and beatboxing, a vocal technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music and various technical effects of hip hop DJ's. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among fans of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture. READ MORE

Random Tribe Called Quest

Now you caught my heart for the evening...

(from Wiki)
A Tribe Called Quest is an American hip hop group, formed in 1985. It was composed of rapper/producer Q-Tip, rapper Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor), and DJ/producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad. A fourth member, rapper Jarobi White, left the group after their first album but appears to have rejoined the group since 2006. Along with De La Soul, the group was a central part of the Native Tongues Posse, and enjoyed the most commercial success out of all the groups to emerge from that collective. Their innovative fusing of hip hop and jazz has had a lasting impact on hip hop music, helping to expand the art of hip hop production. Many of their songs, such as "Bonita Applebum", "Can I Kick It?", "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo", "Scenario", "Check the Rhime", "Jazz (We've Got)", "Award Tour" and "Electric Relaxation" are regarded as classics.
