Brett Gardner expected to have the night off Friday night. After spending his morning reading books and mingling with ailing children at New York Presbyterian Children's Hospital in Manhattan, Gardner figured he'd have a good seat on the bench for Alex Rodriguez's first game at the new Yankee Stadium. But after Johnny Damon got ejected from the game for arguing a called third strike in the third inning, Gardner was pressed into service.
