On a Tuesday about four years ago, Bud Selig's wife pointedly told the baseball commissioner to take out the garbage. Later that day, Selig spoke with George Steinbrenner, and mentioned the domestic issue. "Every Tuesday for at least three months he called to make sure I'd taken the garbage out," Selig said Tuesday, smiling while remembering his friend of nearly 40 years. Every element of the All-Star Game - from the commissioner's annual session with baseball writers, to discussion in the pregame clubhouses, to the moment of silence that preceded the first pitch - was altered by the longtime Yankee owner's death of a heart attack Tuesday at age 80. In the final act of a headline-grabbing life, Steinbrenner became the primary story of a major day in the sport. Selig, meeting with members of the Baseball Writers Association of America, called the sharing of Steinbrenner memories a "catharsis."
